Dun slip ‘shouldn’t happen’ A slip on the Dun Mountain Trail could have been prevented, say two Nelson residents who were vocal in their opposition to a new “pest proof ” fence being installed just below the historic track. Well-known mountainbiking advocate Bryce Buckland and Nelson Residents Association president Mike Rodwell, say the major slip which wiped out a section of the track should never have happened. Mike says a geotechnical report, indicating that cutting the fenceline close to the Dun Mountain Trail would increase the risk of slips, was ignored by council. “Any practical person knows that cutting the toes of hills in Nelson is inviting problems big time,” Mike says. “The experts on this project have committed a cardinal sin and must now front up to their mistakes.” Nelson City Council says reopening the Dun Mountain Trail is a priority for it and the Brook

Waimarama Trust. A 22 metre long section of the 152-year-old Dun Mountain Trail slipped onto the new fence line cut for the sanctuary’s pestproof fence, following heavy rain in Nelson on March 6. Engineers are presently assessing the damage and sanctuary general manager Hudson Dodd says they expect to have some options for repairing the trail within a week. “We are waiting for the assessment so, until then, we don’t have a lot to go on,” Hudson says. “But we are very keen to reopen the Dun Mountain Trail and we are working to make that happen as soon as possible - we expect to have an initial assessment in a week.”

Dogs take a dip at Nayland Pools Jessie Johnston Dogs in a public pool may sound like a strange idea, but our furry four-legged friends were loving their wet day out last Saturday. Nayland Pools opened its gates for Dogs’ Splash for the first time on the weekend, an event that has become popular at other outdoor pools around New Zealand.

The event was put on at no charge to dog owners and ran as part of the pool’s Nelson summer programme. More than 45 dogs took to the water, including Wendy and Dick Thomas’ dog Max. They say it was a great opportunity for some safe fun and exercise. Max is a true water dog, they say, but swimming in the ocean isn’t an option as his

tendency to just keep on going means he could drown. Wendy says as soon as they saw the event advertised they were excited to bring Max along, his only chance to get his paws wet besides the odd swim in their pool at home. After such a positive turn-out of owners and their dogs, it is hoped that Dogs’ Splash could become a annual event.

Council was warned about slip risks an existing track on the existing alignment. “A resource consent is required for further works to the Dun Mountain Trail because remediation of the slip is outside the parameters of emergency works. A design will need to be submitted for approval to reinstate the trail and this will include recommendations from a geotech and arborist - once that is done then resource consent will be needed.” Paul says the new fence line can be cleared because it is wide enough to allow digger and truck access. The bottom of the slip has already been moved by the

FROM PAGE 1 The council’s communications manager, Paul Shattock, says one option would be a “quick fix to open up the trail to cyclists and pedestrians” by removing around 4-6 cubic metres of ground. A consent has already been granted for this under emergency works. However, Paul says permanent repairs will take longer because the slip is situated in the conservation zone. Soil disturbance or earthworks are not permitted in this zone except for the maintenance of

sanctuary’s contractors and the material is being hauled to selected sites. Mike, who is a former trustee of the Dun Mountain Trail, says both he and Bryce warned the council about the potential risks of conducting significant earthworks near the trail. Bryce says the terrain near the slip is so steep that “the probability of slope failure was obvious and the fence should not have been allowed anywhere near the trail.” Hudson concedes they were aware of the risk of slips but that an engineering report required by Nelson City Council for a resource consent showed that it was an acceptable route for a fence. “We did due diligence,” Hudson says. “The report didn’t indicate there was any strong evidence to re-route the fence line.” Paul says engineers are currently investigating whether there is a relationship between the earthworks and the slip.

Former Grey Power president to stand Andrew Board Two former presidents of Nelson Grey Power have made two very different public announcements this week – one is re-standing for president, the other is pulling out. Gordon Currie, president of the organisation for 21 years, is putting his name forward to be president again, while Neville Male, his successor, has pulled out of the race. Gordon made his announcement to Nelson Weekly, saying he’s been asked by members to stand to provide some “stability and direction” to Nelson Grey Power. “It has been difficult for me to stand by and watch the drama that has occurred over the last six months. I have remained silent because I do not believe that these problems can be solved by public arguments and clashes of personality. No one wins in this scenario, especially not Nelson Grey Power and its members.” He says when he retired there was a fully-equipped office with two staff members, 45 volunteers and $100,000 invested. “I do not believe that this is the situation now. I must reiterate that volunteers are the back-

bone of our organisation, without them we fail. These people work long hours and contribute much. The skills of our volunFormer teers should Nelson Grey be utilized to Power presitheir maxident Gordon mum and Currie. they should be treated with respect at all times.” Gordon’s announcement comes less than a week after ousted president, Neville Male, said he would not stand for president at the AGM, but endorsed a “progressive” list of candidates. Leaked emails show there were plans to restore Neville to the presidency but publicity spokesperson for the “progressive” team, Errol Miller, says those plans were shelved. “It wouldn’t be a good look for the person elected president to then pull out for Neville to take his place.” The email, sent on March 19 by Garry Thompson, a Male supporter and candidate for the position of secretary at the

upcoming AGM, showed their “plan of action” to get Male back in as president. “If (when) we have a majority on the ‘new’ committee, Neville’s membership can be reinstated and he would then be eligible to stand for the position of president. “As put forward at the meeting on 12 March, the elected president (being one of our team) would then resign for whatever reasons, and a [special general meeting] would then be called to fill the vacancy. At this time Neville, being a fully paid-up member and having been so for a number of years, would be eligible to stand for the position. “With the strong support of our group, Neville would be elected to the position and it would then be business as normal,” said the email. Members on both sides of the warring factions say they hope the AGM on April 1 will end months of dispute between the two. Both sides are urging a big turnout for the AGM, which is being held at 10.30am at Annesbrook Church, on Saxton Rd, in Stoke. Nominations for elected positions close at 4pm Tuesday, March 24.

New Zealand and parents are returning to work earlier and not staying at home as long as they used to. Regionally, we are trying to keep all the centres open and financially viable until possible national changes are made,” says Amanda. Playcentre began over 70 years ago as a support service to women who were left raising children alone during the Second World War. Its original aim was to provide leisure for mothers and opportunities for the social development of pre-school aged children. Today there are 33 Playcentre Associations throughout New Zealand which offer a learning environment for chil-

dren from birth to six years. A typical Playcentre session is held between 9.30am to 12noon. Trish Casey, CEO of the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association, says pressures on the availability of parents at home have forced Kindergartens across the region to adjust their hours also. “Over the last few years, all of our centres within the region have been migrating towards school hours, we are definitely following what the demand is,” says Trish. In the meantime, Kelly says they’d love to have more Stoke families enquire about joining the Playcentre.

Flight cancelled so plane could stay in Auckland Stranded passengers of an Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Nelson last Sunday say they will make a formal complaint, after the airline admitted they cancelled the flight because they wanted the plane to stay in Auckland. As reported by Nelson Weekly last week, passengers were scheduled to fly from Auckland to Nelson but the flight was delayed until it was finally cancelled. The reason given was poor weather, but Air New Zealand admitted the poor weather was for the return leg, meaning it could have flown the passengers home to Nelson but it didn’t want the plane stuck here overnight. Air New Zealand spokeswoman Imogen Dennis says “a number of factors” caused the issue. “First, the aircraft was late arriving into Auckland. The second factor was that engineering requirements for other aircraft in our turbo prop fleet meant this aircraft was required in Auckland for the peak Monday morning services. “With weather conditions forecast

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz

to seriously deteriorate, the decision was taken not to operate the outbound service to Nelson as there was a significant risk the weather conditions would have prevented the aircraft making the return leg to Auckland.” Passengers say they should have been compensated for their accommodation costs because the reason they didn’t get home was because Air NZ wanted the plane left in Auckland, not bad weather stopping them from leaving. But Imogen says the airline will not be compensating them. “As stated in our previous response, while engineering requirements played a part in the initial delay of flight NZ5253, the final decision to cancel the flight was made due to weather conditions. For this reason, compensation for overnight accommodation expenses was not provided.”

TOY LIBRARY OPEN DAY: Rosie Claridge, 3, concentrates hard on hitting the ball as she enjoys some of the activities on offer at the Stoke Toy Library Fun Day, at the Marsden Rec on Sunday. The fourth annual family event featured a number of fun things to do from pony rides, face painting and bouncy castles, plus special guests Fairee Lou, Koru the ASB penguin and Roger the storyteller. The event is Stoke Toy Library’s main fundraising event with this year’s day raising $757 for its continued operation. Organisers say the total money raised was down on previous years due to the threat of the weather and they fact they were unable to offer the services of the popular Noddy Train. Local man remembers Gallipoli tales Richmond’s David Gruschow could be one of the last people in the country to have heard a first-hand account of what it was like in Gallipoli. David’s great uncle, Doug Dibley, was New Zealand’s longest surviving Gallipoli veteran, passing away in 1997 at the age of 101. David remembers visiting his great uncle on the family farm as a young child and recalls his family always being proud of his war efforts. Doug was from Rotorua and during WWI he was a stretcher bearer in the field hospital unit. It was believed that he carried the last wounded man off the peninsula before the final evacuation. In later years, David would visit his great uncle in his rest home where they would share stories about serving in the army, including Doug’s Gallipoli experiences. David received general service medals for his time as a Military Chaplain, serving in Bosnia and Bougainville during their civil wars. “Some people who fought at Gallipoli didn’t like to talk about it but he would chat quite happily about it, perhaps it was because I was also in the army. He talked about training at Trentham and how the con-

Doug joined the army in 1915 at 19 years old, after he and his mate saw an advertisement in the paper wanting orderlies in Trentham Military Camp. They had been training a month when they were sent off overseas as members of the New Zealand medical corps. He was transported to Gallipoli at night, to the top of the cliffs at Walker’s Ridge, where the unit was located right behind the lines. The young green soldiers were told to dig holes and burrow in, where they would hear bullets whizz past, a new sensation for Doug, having never heard a shell burst or rifle bullet fly past

before. His job was to take injured soldiers down to the base at the beach, waiting for them to be transshipped at night. Almost 9000 New Zealanders served at Gallipoli and conditions were rough. Soldiers didn’t have enough water for a wash and, as a result, lice were rife throughout the camp. Food consisted of bully beef, biscuits, jam and cheese, with the odd tin of stew. Doug returned to New Zealand in 1918, married and had 11 children. Like many war veterans, he saw first hand the damage war does to people, both at home and to those who go away, and as a result his last recorded statement was “No-one wins in the end”.

‘Seals’ brave cold at sea swims

They do it for all sorts of reasons. Some of them don’t like being restricted by a tight wetsuit. Others just enjoy the pure, uncomplicated simplicity of it all and a few just like the natural sensation of seawater against their skin. But whatever their reasons, the swimmers who went through the Port Nelson Sea Swim series wearing nothing but togs certainly gained the admiration of their wetsuited counterparts. The 18race series started on November 6 when the water was a chilly 13 or 14 degrees Celcius and ended last Thursday. “It was pretty cold at the start for them,” series organiser Dick Bennison says. “You can’t just jump in and swim in the cold like that - you have to acclimatise and that’s what a lot of them do. “I think quite a few, like Geoff Lart, swim right through winter without a wetsuit. But most of them are Poms and I reckon if you learned to swim in the Irish Sea anything else will seem warm.” But Peter Thomas, who swam without a wetsuit for the first time this season, says the worst part is actually standing around waiting to get in the water. “The first few swims were cold, but the hardest part was standing around waiting for the swim. Once you get in the water and get going it’s actually not too bad.” Peter says he decided to join the nonwetsuit swimmers this season “for a challenge”.

Chris Baird, left, Peter Thomas, centre, and Digby Kynaston, have been going au naturel in the Port Nelson Sea Swims this season. Apart from the cold, he says it also took some time to feel comfortable swimming without the potentially lifesaving buoyancy of a wetsuit. “It took a while to get used to it, but now I’m really enjoying it,” he says. Veteran non-wetsuit swimmers, Chris Baird and Digby Kynaston, concede that they also felt the cold early in the season but Chris says that just “makes you feel very fresh and alive”. Digby says he couldn’t imagine swimming in the sea without the “feel of the water on your body”. But the early season chill and lack of buoyancy aren’t the only challenges of swimming without a wetsuit. “You lose some speed because wetsuits

give swimmers extra streamlining,” Peter says. “I’ve noticed this year I’m about a minute and half slower over a kilometre without my wetsuit.” Dick also jokes that non-wetsuit swimmers need to be in good shape because they don’t enjoy the flattering coverage provided of a wetsuit. “The likes of Chris and Geoff are all well-toned which helps when you don’t wear a wetsuit. I couldn’t swim in togs - a muffin top and Speedo isn’t a good look.” For the record, Geoff Lart won the non-wetsuit men’s long course series ahead of Peter and Chris, with Cheryl le Lange, Kay McPherson and Monique Day on the podium for the women.

Sanctuary hosts open day The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary held their annual open day on the weekend, updating the public on Nelson’s current conservation project. Trust chairperson Dave Butler said the open day was particularly significant this year now that the construction of the fence is in full swing. Taylors Contracting have been working hard to get the fence up, currently working at the far end of the sanctuary, and Dave says it is exciting to finally see pictures of their own fence. The open day was also a chance

for the public to learn about volunteer opportunities, as there is still plenty of help needed for tasks such as track cutting and trapping. With a road now built around the sanctuary, everybody’s jobs have been made easier, after previous volunteers were required to tramp for hours, sometimes, to reach a particular site. Popular personality Ruud Kleinpaste was there on the day too, taking people for a walk in the bush and unearthing all manner of amazing creatures, along with the chance for a real live Kiwi encounter.

That’s when we get our thinking caps on,” she says. New Zealand bands and musicians, including Wellington band Brockaflower and Auckland based Sola Rosa, kept dancing crowds entertained, while those who wanted to learn a bit more about the industry or how their favourite beer was brewed could attend brew talks in the Brew Zone.

A celebration of the region’s craft beer was held on Saturday as the annual Marchfest took place at Founders Park. Sixteen craft brewers showcased their beers with each brewing their own speciality creations for the event. Seventeen new beers made their debut. Sprig and Fern head brewer, Tracy Banner, says it was a great day for Marchfest with 300 litres of their brew, Paley Aley, selling out early on. “It was a brand new brew, it was launched at Marchfest so it couldn’t be commercially available. It was a fresh hop international-style pale ale. We went out and got the very first hops

Sleeping man saved from smoke by teens: Around 3am Saturday morning, a gentleman returned home from a night of drinking and decided to cook some sausages in a pan on a stove. The man went into another room to sit down and fell asleep, leaving the pan unattended. Smoke alarms alerted three 17 year olds to the property who called emergency services, broke in and rescued the man. The man was treated at the house by ambulance but did not require hospital care.

Summer Fare celebrates the end of summer in style

Despite the cooler weather, the locals came out to enjoy the Sprig & Fern Summer Harvest Fare last Friday at Sundial Square. Organiser of the event, Kim Quint from Richmond Unlimited, says it was a great night without any incidences. “There was a good steady crowd all night and it was a very calm, laid back evening. There was a distinct lack of young ones attending, compared with previous The crowd enjoying the Sprig & Fern Summer Harvest Fare at Sundial Square on Friday night. years,” says Kim. were on offer from around the region and band Urban entertained the crowd, with people up dancing and having a great time. Kids were kept occupied too, with a bouncy castle and face painting. In past years, youngsters around the event have caused problems, but police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn says there were few problems on the night. “One person was taken away for intoxication at Washbourn Gardens and there were a couple of infringements of the liquor ban.”

Opinion

TUESDAY 24 March 2015

Air New Zealand flight cancelled: I am not surprised to read your report. My wife and I were booked on NZ5253 on Sunday, August 31st, last year as the last leg of a trip home from the UK, and on landing at Auckland we discovered that the flight had been cancelled. No explanation given. We finally - after a lot of being mucked around got on the 2050 flight, and arrived home considerably more tired that we had expected. We had originally been booked on 5253 the previous Friday, but had to re-book as my wife became unwell on the flight across Australia and we had to stay in Brisbane for two nights. We then discovered that a neighbour had been booked on 5253 on the Friday we were originally booked, and that flight was cancelled. She also told us that a friend of hers had had the same experience on the same flight within the previous two weeks. That is beyond coincidence. The inescapable conclusion is that this flight is a phantom flight, scheduled, but operated only if there are enough passengers. It doesn’t matter how much the passengers are inconvenienced. Anyone seeking any semblance of a reliable booking would be well advised to avoid this particular flight. Roger Cole.

These customer service people need a shake up, as well as the national carrier. Sheralee Taylor. Yes, this was a strange situation. We were on the 5.40 flight from Auckland which left on schedule, de-

spite the earlier flight being postponed and subsequently cancelled. Stranger still was the fact that there were empty seats on our flight! Alison Lonsdale. The attitude of staff does not surprise me one bit, flew Air NZ, international last year, same shit attitude from staff. Airline of the year? Yeah right! Never again... Brian Gower. You can email Air NZ all you like, they NEVER reply!! When's that other airline starting from Nelson? Jude Gray Grey Power: It is unfortunate that due to an unwillingness to accept arbitration, and a lack of interpersonal skills, the former Nelson Grey Power leadership has attempted to discredit the standing Committee. The current Nelson Grey Power Committee and Vice-President, who have been named as rebels by the former leadership, have, in fact, acted constitutionally and appropriately in trying to advance the interests of the members. If politicians call black white often enough, the public sometimes believe what is being stated and are misled. But it can be hoped that at the Grey Power AGM on April 1, the members will not vote for the so-called “Progressive” candidates who are standing for committee. They plan to reinstate the former leadership which has overlooked appropriate constitutional procedure. Dan McGuire.

Water levels: I was reading in National Geographic that sea levels are predicted to rise by at least 2 feet, and possibly up to 6ft, by 2100. Surely this needs to be planned for and should be treated as a matter of priority. It would make the Southern Link on Rocks Rd unviable and there is the concern that the whole of the CBD etc would be underwater. What does the mayor have to say? By the way, this is not a 'do you believe in global warming' question as the planet has warmed 1 degree over the past century. Whether it is man made, (most likely) or not, is not the point. The point is what are we going to do about it? Doug Barry-Martin. Victory Liquor to reopen: I wonder if people would be opposed to it if it sold over-priced locally-sourced craft beers and ciders? Ryan Fouhy. Good, time to support local business. Matt Inglis. Bloody hell! They should not reopen! What has happened to this area? I've been here since 1996. It was peaceful and lovely, but now it's filled with drug addicts and alcoholics. Having that alcohol store there is just going to make things worse. That store used to be the best dairy store, run by the most lovely guy. Jannelle Patterson.

Nelson home-owners are getting in behind Neighbours Day Aotearoa with street parties, working bees and barbecues. Neighbours Day Aotearoa has grown in popularity, with around 70 events organised across the region this year. A mix of neighbourhood groups are involved, from small gatherings of around five households to larger parties of around 60 households. Events organized this year include street parties, bbq’s at local parks, dessert evenings, pot luck dinners, and morning and afternoon teas. Residents of Tindall Place, in The Brook, have organised a clean up of their local reserve as a way of meeting their neighbours. “People are really getting into the spirit of it and see it as a good way to get to know your neighbours,” says Karen Clark, coordinator of Neighbourhood Support Nelson. Neighbourhood Support Nelson provided 70 Pestells meat and Stoke Bakery vouchers, funded through grants from the Nelson City Council and the Network Tasman Trust. The vouchers were used as an incentive for neighbours to organise gatherings for the weekend celebration, which will be held on March 28-29. New Zealand’s biggest celebration of neighbourliness was established in 2009, and since that time thousands of people, organisations, local government and businesses have been involved in bringing neighbours together to encourage more friendly, fun and safe neighbourhoods. For further information, visit neighboursday.org.nz.

YouthFest 2015 will be a fusion of everything to do with youth, from food and art, to culture, fashion and music. The idea for a celebration of youth in Nelson has been floating around for a while, say organisers, and when it featured high on a survey completed by 800 people, planning started for the very first YouthFest event. Using the unique outdoor venue of Morrison Square, those attending YouthFest 2015 can look forward to seeing some great local acts and local youth group performers, as well as the main act, season one X-Factor winner Jackie Thomas, supported by finalist Tom Bachelor. The event will also include Project Funway, originally run by Morrison Square, where participants only have the use of a white sheet to create a garment under the theme of cultural couture. It’s not too late to enter, simply go online to their Facebook page. Food will be on sale thanks to Marcel’s, Pita Pit and Chilando’s, plus, there will be stalls set up by

The savill family, originally from the uK, were thrilled to become new Zealand citizens after a formal ceremony in council chambers on Wednesday. Patrick, Kimberley, Melanie and Tim savill have lived in new Zealand since 2009 and over the years have come to love the area's climate, friendliness and people. “It’s immensely important to us, it’s somewhere we really feel is home, somewhere we actually want to be and want to be able to give back to properly because we feel we’ve had a lot. It’s also a chance to just properly sit on the couch and shout for the all Blacks,” says Tim. around 30 people became citizens at the ceremony, including former British, Fijian, Filipino, French, Myanmari, samoan and south africans. FIGHT4VICTO FIGHT FOR VICTORY NEL Nelson Weekly

TUESDAY 24 March 2015

FIGHT4VICTORY2 FIGHT FIGHT FOR VICTORY

Fight 4 Victory is a proven winner out of the ring and it’s now only ten days away from finding out who the winners will be inside it. The corporate boxing event was first held in 2013, raising money for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust. It’s success has helped improve the lives of local kids and of the boxers who took part. The money raised from that first event took a small after-school programme with a few kids and turned it into a hub of Victory. A place buzzing with people, throughout the day and night, six days a week. Since then a lot of work has gone into getting the structures and programmes right as the trust has quadrupled in numbers. So this year’s Fight 4 Victory isn’t so much about establishing a facility and programme, it’s now about making sure it’s here for the long haul. This year’s Fight 4 Victory will feature 20 local boxers. Amongst them are business people, chefs, hairdressers, engineers, lawyers, a landscaper and a police officer. Regular people who are putting their body on the line to help raise money for a good cause.

Andrew Marriott lands a heavy shot on Rob Crawford at the last Fight 4 Victory. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport. Fifty corporate tables have already been sold for the event and general admission tickets are selling well. Programme director at the trust, Paul

Hampton, says he’d love to see a good crowd on the night. “This event is unique for Nelson. We don’t see a lot of events like it so hopefully people grab a few friends and

make a night of it. There’ll be a lot of people who know some of the fighters, but even if you don’t it’s still great entertainment.” The fight is sanctioned by the New Zealand Professional Boxing Association and will be MC’d by comedian Mike King and local personality Murray Leaning. Paul says every cent of the money raised goes to the trust. “The funds help sustain and grow our programme and without this event we wouldn’t be here. It’s hugely important for us.” Pat Leonard from the NZ Professional Boxing Association says he does around 50 corporate events around the country each year and the Fight 4 Victory is one of the best. Paul says the fighters have put in 12 hard weeks of work, Saxton Stadium will look a treat and now all it needs is a good turn out to cheer them all on. Doors open for Fight 4 Victory at 5.30pm at Saxton Stadium on April 4. The first fight starts at 7pm and the event is expected to be finished before 10pm. General admission tickets are $35 per person and can be bought from the Theatre Royal, Nelson i-Site, Richmond Mall or online at www.ticketdirect.co.nz

Colourplus owners Trish Gray, John Gray, Nicola Gear and Kevin Gear are proud to be offering customers the best service from their newly merged store. Colourplus Richmond is the ultimate design destination, especially now that they have combined the resources and knowledge of both the Richmond and Nelson stores. The successful merger, completed just before Christmas last year, has meant the Nelson store and its staff have been picked up and relocated to Richmond, creating a bigger, brighter and better business for all their customers. By having all their resources under one roof, Colourplus can now run a more efficient operation. For customers that means having consultants present in every instance to handle enquiries surrounding home design, and when it comes to samples, Colourplus now have the largest collection across drapes, wallpaper and blinds in the Nelson Tasman region. During their merge, Colourplus are also proud to have taken on Luxaflex, the high end brand name in blinds. While the move means a physical presence in Nelson is no more, Colourplus are thrilled that a substantial number of Nelson homeowners have followed them to Richmond, taking advantage of their fantastic range in all things design and their unbeatable expertise. Colourplus are far more than a paint shop; they represent all aspects of colour, texture and style and are just as committed to the outcome of your home as you are. “We’re not just here for you to choose a can of paint; we want to be involved in your whole project, whether it’s one room, one cupboard or one house,” says owner, Kevin

Gear. “If you’re doing a new build, we can help co-ordinate all of your colours including your joinery, roof colour, tile colour, brick colour and exterior fittings.” When it comes to finishing and furnishing a new home, renovating, or refreshing a particular space, Colourplus are there for you right from the start. From the initial inquiry in store to the free in home consultation, every detail about your new room or home is discussed from floor to ceiling. If it’s a new kitchen or a new lounge you’re looking to create, consultants will work with you to choose every aspect whether they sell it or not, offering the exact same services that a paid interior designer would provide. “We listen closely to our customers and once we pick up that people are wanting to make extensive changes to their home, it’s really important for us to know all the information regarding furnishings, because all of those items have to go with the wallpaper and the drapes. We don’t choose for them, we’ll come up with options and they will make the final decision, but we are dedicated to creating an outcome that exceeds their expectations and the only way to do that is to be part of the whole process,” says Kevin. No matter what size project you may be undertaking, make sure you give Colourplus a call and take advantage of a free in home consultation with one of their brilliant colour consultants. Their professional ideas and range of products are guaranteed to create a stunning home.

Retirement is a time that many people are looking forward to and this year’s Positive Ageing Expo at Headingly Centre is packed with information and services that will help make your retirement years some of the best of your life. The expo will be showcasing around 70 stalls, from commercial services to help you maintain a fit and healthy body through to a range of leisure groups that can help you fill your social schedule. There are many services out there to help people age positively, from the health basics such as hearing and blood pressure tests, to social opportunities to make it easier for people who have a bit more time on their hands to enjoy themselves and meet people with similar interests. Those out there with skills they wish to carry on into their retirement can utilise them within community groups, such as Menz Shed and the trapping and bird recovery groups that

Many of these clubs aren’t found in the phone book and this is the perfect chance to break the ice and learn more about how your skills or enthusiasm can be put to good use. Alongside their stall holders, the Positive Ageing Expo will feature two great seminars by Lois Tonkin and Mark Inglis. In the first seminar Lois will be dis-

cussing how to cope with grief. Feelings of grief cover a number of situations that we face throughout life, as well as bereavement. It could be moving out of the family home and downsizing, or saying goodbye to family as they become independent. In the afternoon, Mark Inglis, a role model for positive ageing, will be delivering an inspirational talk on the challenges he has faced during

Records fall at schools athletics champs

Nelson College for Girls' Breena Gibbons leads eventual winner Jessica Alloway, second from right, in the under-14 girls 800m at the Tasman secondary schools athletics championships at Saxton Field. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Nelson College middle-distance runner Sam Mackay-Wright showed he is hitting form at the right time, when he won the senior boys 3000m at the Tasman schools athletics champs at Saxton Field. Sam won last Wednesday's 3000m in a fast 9min 2.51sec, with Marlborough Boys' Thomas Westend second and Nayland's Dustin Blazek third. Although Sam was five seconds outside his personal best, set when finishing 11th in last year's national schools champs, he is aiming to improve his PB when he lines up in the South Island champs at Saxton this weekend. "It was difficult running by myself and I had to push hard on the last two laps," Sam says. "But it was still a fast race and I'm happy with my form - the aim is to try and get a personal best at the South Islands." Nelson College for Girls', Hunta Sutherland (girls under-14) and Evie Strawbridge (under-15 girls), and Nelson College's Kalan Sheridan (under-15 boys) also won their 3000m races. However, Waimea College's Bridie Edwards produced the best 3000m of the day, setting a new under-16 girls record of 10min 33.03sec. Hunta also won the under-14 girls 1500m, while her schoolmates Georgia Trengrove

(under-15) and Beth Versey (under-16) won their 800-1500 doubles. Thomas Littleworth of Nelson College won the under-16 boys 800m and 1500m. Nelson College's Jordan Newsome won the under-14 boys 400m with Culainn Stringer winning the under-19 boys 400m. Nelson College's Jamie Wilson won the under-14 boys 100m-200m double with Asher Wells taking out the under-19 boys sprints. Nayland College's Bailey Cotton won the under-16 boys 200m. Bailey also won the under-16 boys discus and shot-put, with schoolmate Taylor Boyen winning the girls under-16 discus and javelin. Joseph Ford of Nelson College set a new record to win the boys under-14 discus, while Nelson College's Adam Amber (under-14 boys) and Lennard Precht (under-16 boys) won their javelin titles. Other field event winners were: Willow Trolove (Nelson College for Girls, under-15 high jump), Matt Parkinson (Nayland College, under-19 boys high jump), Natasha Bannister (Nelson College for Girls, under-16 triple jump), Geena Gross (Nelson College for Girls, under-19 girls shot put), Dylan Smith (Nelson College, under-15 boys shot put) and Darlene Rangiuia (Nayland College, under-14 girls shot put).

Nelson league player excels against Warriors Nelson rugby league player Marvin Curry has impressed the right people after scoring a stand-out try in a match against the Vodafone Warriors development team in Auckland. Marvin, who was born in Samoa, moved to Nelson with his family six years ago and has proven to be an all-round talented athlete. He represented Samoa in an invitational XIII rugby league team when playing against the Vodafone Warriors de-

velopment team earlier this month. “It was a privilege to be chosen to play for Samoa, it has been one of my dreams to represent my country of birth in any sport,” says Marvin. The Nelson College year 13 student was playing right centre when he scored during the match, which saw the Warriors team win 34-8. Former Kiwi’s Tony Iro, Duane Mann and Stacey Jones, now Junior Warriors coach, watched the youngster play and

liked what they saw. As a result, Australian NRL player agents Jim Banaghan and Steve Gillis have shown an interest in working with him. Marvin, who is part of the South Island Rugby League Academy, says he likes the centre position but also enjoys playing fullback, in the halves or on the wing. “I really enjoy playing rugby league as there is more space to run and not as many stoppages as rugby. In rugby, I used to play on

the wing and not touch the ball very much. In rugby league I get plenty of ball and it is a lot faster,” says Marvin. At 16, under New Zealand Rugby League rules, Marvin is too young to play for an open first grade rugby league team, so he will likely play rugby union for his school before returning to league for the Tasman Titans under-17 team. His ultimate goal is to play at a professional level in an NRL team one day.

Nelson suffer big loss to Stoke

Galbraith Group Nelson had a dismal start to the Car Company Nelson Bays division one club rugby season on Saturday, losing 46-8 to Freeman Roofing Stoke at Trafalgar Park. Nelson couldn't shake the early-season blues, suffering from a lack of cohesion as they conceded eight tries to a hard-running and bigtackling Stoke team. Stoke led 22-3 at half time after tries to Nick Max (two), Kerehama Barrett and captain Stu Tunnicliff, before scoring another five after the interval. The only high points in Nelson's performance were a steady scrum and some solid work around the field by a diligent tight five. Captain and halfback Loui Harvey led by example on defence, but his efforts were the exception rather than the rule. Kahurangi defeated Wakatu Hotel Marist 15-9 and Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys beat Taylors Contracting Wanderers 20-8 in the other division one games, also played at Trafalgar Park. The Nelson Bs gave the club something to celebrate, beating Stoke B 15-10 in their division two game played at Neale Park.

FC Nelson looks to take on Falcons

Andrew Board

The championship-winning Nelson Marlborough Falcons football team could fold if talks with FC Nelson don’t pan out, says chair of the board behind the team Aldo Miccio. Aldo says the current board behind the team will not bid for a licence after their current licence expires for the 2017 season

and he’d like to see a club take over to make sure the team remains sustainable. The Falcons had a mixed 2014. On the field it won the national title, an incredible achievement. But off the pitch the lack of a major sponsor and dwindling board meant the organising of the team was done by fewer people and the board is still paying off last year’s entry fee. Aldo says the team should be in a club

structure, where it will have access to more volunteers and supporters. He says the Falcons are about to enter formal discussions with FC Nelson. “After last season we realised that everyone has done their bit, we had run the franchise for two years and needed it to go to a club. We’ve had board members there from the start and if you look at any board you need rotation.” FC Nelson president George Molnar says

Skaters off to Oceania champs For those who don’t know, artistic skating is a bit like dancing on wheels, and this April, Nelson Roller Sports Club will be sending two skaters off to the Oceania Invitational Championships in Australia. Keiko Bamba and her fifteen year old daughter Mitsuko Nam have been practicing hard for the upcoming competition over April 7-10, in which over 70 skaters from countries including Australia, New Zealand, China and Japan will be skating for titles. Keiko’s other daughter, Hayley, also skates and is taking up the role of coach in preparation for the champs. After coming to the skating rink as small children and seeing girls practicing artistic skating, Hayley and Mitsuko decided it was the sport for them, and when sitting on the side lines had lost its appeal, Keiko donned skates too and has now been skating alongside them for five years. The pair qualified for the champs in Rotorua in October last year and say it is the most important competition they can compete in outside of the world championships. We know that Ethne would have been so humbled and touched by all of those who came to pay their respects. We were really grateful to everyone who visited, phoned, sent emails and cards. Your support and thoughtfulness gave us an enormous amount of comfort. It was really heart-warming to see so many people at Ethne’s funeral especially those who had travelled so far to attend and many faces from years ago. We were truly grateful to the staff at the Kensington Court who have cared for mum’s care over the last 18mths – thank you. We also would like to thank the ladies who did such a lovely job of the refreshments after the service. If we have missed anyone please accept this as a personal thank you and acknowledgement of gratitude on behalf of the Nicholls family this being an end of an era for us.
